Tre di Una by Hunn Wai

Hunn Wai (1980, London) has just graduated from the IM Masters programme* of the renowned Design Academy Eindhoven, under the direction of DROOG Design co-founder Gijs Bakker.

Hailing from the island city-state of Singapore, a melting pot for the colours and flavours of diverse cultures, his design philosophy is drawn towards the processes and results of collisions, combinations and fusions of materials, meanings and forms.

After taking sculpture at ‘O’ levels, self-teaching himself graphic design (inspired by the likes of David Carson and Joshua Davis), completing a Bachelors in Industrial Design (with Honours), studying and interning (for Studio Oooms & Maarten Baas) in the Netherlands was the perfect next step and keystone in his creative-evolution.

Armed with the knowledge of contemporary design and manufacturing methods as well as an appreciation and the application of hands-on craft-like experimentation, Wai hopes to communicate his views in refreshing and surprising ways.

Now let his Happy Mirror start your day with a smile, his sunlight-activated shady umbrella give you comforting repose, and family of chairs fulfill the functional and the emotional.

Hunn Wai designed Tre di Una (“Three from One”). A family of chairs created from the components of a generic wooden one by using the characteristics of plastic clay. The rigidity of an iconic chair is broken down by this process to result in unique and playful pieces with new identities and functions; suggesting possibilities and new aesthetics.
