HERO
Thank you Amy for your advice, you were right.

Don't miss the end...wonderful surprises all the way through. Hero is an amazing accomplishment, a performance you watch with your heart. This work has helped raise interest and awareness for many charities and worthy causes.
Hero explores commitment to an ideal. It asks the question: What endeavor would you undertake knowing full well that the odds are you will fail? What would you give your all to knowing it's likely you will be severely injured or even die trying? What is the greatest possible reward and in that thought, what is the most valuable and priceless thing on earth?

Kitchens and Dining that speak your Style

THE HEART OF THE HOME

Everyone is naturally drawn to the kitchen. Emotionally, it represents the heart of the home. Design your kitchen as a room for the whole family to live in. When the kitchen is comfortable, the cook will never lack for company.
Whether your dining room is formal or informal, a separate room, or part of the kitchen or living areas, it should always be planned around the table and chairs. Keep it uncluttered, comfortable and conducive to lingering long after the last plate is cleared away

Kitchens and dining rooms decorated in a traditional style are classic and distinguished. They employ muted colors for a look that’s elegant, refined and slightly formal.

Tip Keep lighting soft, with classic fixtures and recessed lighting in the kitchen, and a chandelier over the dining room table.

Simple and functional sums up the look for modern-styled kitchens and dining rooms. Pure, cool colors work well, complementing the clean, simple lines that help define this look.

Tip Combine natural, polished woods with industrial features, such as metal and glass. Polished nickels and pewters make excellent highlights.

A good rule-of-thumb in using a country palette is that the colors should blend well with nature, and create an atmosphere that’s warm, inviting and welcoming.

Tip Display your vintage china plates on walls, like pictures, or as a collection in a hutch or open cabinet.

Using a mix of your favorite styles creates kitchens and dining rooms with a casual, eclectic atmosphere. For example, pair the clean lines of modern with the warmth of country. Use color to unify and harmonize the look.

Tip: Group together objects with common colors or shapes, to help tie the look together. Modern vases might be arranged on the top of a classic console table, creating an interesting focal point.

ADD INSPIRATION TO THE MENU

One enjoyable way to find inspiration for your dining room or kitchen is by dining at popular restaurants. Good taste isn’t just confined to what’s on your plate. Top interior designers design popular restaurants specifically for eating, relaxing and socializing. They must look great, and work well, too. Note how these spaces use form, color and lighting. Look at the accessories and little details that make them special places. When you get back home, you’ll find yourself looking at your kitchen and dining room in a whole new way.

In terms of square footage, ceilings are a significant part of any room. And especially in bedrooms, they're something you look at each and every day. Painting the ceiling is a great way to give any room a complete, more finished look.

Traditionally, white is the most commonly used color for ceilings. This is because it reflects light very well, and—let's face it—white goes with everything. So if you want a foolproof ceiling solution, white should definitely not be overlooked. However, do bear in mind there are many different types of whites—from subtly warm, to cooler and more blue-based.

Choose a shade that will work with the room, and the rest of your décor. For example, a bluer white may be ideal for a bathroom, while a warmer white might be an excellent choice for a bedroom.

Contrary to what you may have heard, white can actually make ceilings appear lower in rooms with low ceilings, and make them seem even more distant in rooms with high, lofty ceilings. Based on this, there are some good general rules to follow when selecting paint colors for your ceiling area:
If your room has ceilings that are 8' high or under, paint the ceiling a shade or two lighter than the color of your walls. If your ceilings are higher than 8', paint them a shade or two darker than your wall color.

Following this advice will help give an illusion of space to a low-ceilinged room, or add a feeling of coziness to rooms with higher ceilings. Leaving the ceiling white, while painting the walls with color, can occasionally make a room seem unfinished. Adding just a touch of color to a ceiling can bring a certain intimacy, as well as give the space a much more finished and refined look.

Depending on your room architecture and natural light, all whites may appear somewhat stark. To overcome this, and add a little unexpected drama, consider painting your ceiling a color that contrasts with the color of the walls (i.e. its opposite on the Color Wheel) Then finish the room with crown molding painted the same color as your walls, but in a glossier sheen.

the colours of Loulou de la Falaise

Article from This is Glamorous

Jewellery designer Loulou de la Falaise's paris home began, 30 years ago, as an empty white space. Today, it's, in her own words, "like a gypsy as it has a lot of colour and generosity. I want it to make people feel happy and surprised but at the same time it needs to be beautiful."

And it is.

Color Ideas from the World of Art 1

In interior design, art is usually the final embellishment, brought in as a finishing touch to a room. However, there's an entirely different way to create inspired interior design—by starting with the art as inspiration! Even if you've never done it before, you'll find it's a very easy way to come up with great-looking color schemes.

ART AS INSPIRATION

Just imagine if one of your favorite artists—Picasso, for example—was a close friend, and you could turn to him for color advice any time you wanted.
Well, actually, you can. Here's how.
FIRST, SET THE MOOD
Start by asking: What kind of feeling do I want to create?
For example, you might decide you want to use vibrant colors to spice up a dull space, or pastels to create a livable, relaxing atmosphere, or neutrals to create a look of quiet, restrained elegance.
Next, visit a library or bookstore, and flip through images of the work of artists you most enjoy.

Tip: You can also search the web for images—try sites of well-known museums to start with. Look for colors or color combinations you like, and think might work in your space.

Visit museums and galleries in person as well, but bear in mind that you'll want to leave with a postcard, a reproduction, or a photograph of your selections as a reminder of the exact shades and hues that most appealed to you.
You can usually see in the artwork itself how well each of the different colors work together.
If you own a piece of art you know you want to use in the room—a painting, a print, a poster, or some pottery, for example—just build your color scheme straight from colors in the art, using the suggestions below.

Tip: Use a photo or a printout of your original art piece. Photos are easier to transport, and involve less risk of damaging the work.

Turning Fine Art Into Room Palettes

When you find something you think might work, go to your favorite paint store to develop complete palettes from your art finds.
Start by simply finding the closest color matches you can, by eye.
In a few minutes, you can modify these colors and develop complete room palettes.
For precise color matching, take along your art reference source to your localpaint store. This will give you the closest possible matches to actual colors.
You can develop and modify your palettes there, and you can walk out of the store with your colors mixed and all ready to go.

ABSTRACT STUDY, SHAPES AND COLORS

In this colorful abstract painting, the artist has employed a strong palette of complementary colors. Just from the painting itself, you get a good idea how these colors might work together, with warm, chestnut brown as the main wall color, paired with an accent of deep blue.

This would make a warm and very livable palette for a dining room or study.

YOUNG GIRL AT CHRISTMAS

This charming illustration from about 1900, of a girl preparing for Christmas suggests a soothing neutral palette.

Using the soft, restful sage for the main wall color, and the warm, rich hue of the oranges as an accent, this scheme would look well in a bedroom, office, or dining area.

MALAY LANDSCAPE

This oil rendering of the sky and sea of the Malay Peninsula offers a number of possibilities for developing a color palette. In particular, notice the golden beige tones and warm browns of the setting sun, and how well they pair with the smoky blue of the sea.

This palette would be a wonderful thought for a bedroom, living room, or family room.

GREEN COCONUTS

Painted in Brazil, this oil on canvas composition has a hint of the tropics in its coloration, especially the yellow-greens and olive tones of the coconuts, accented with the warm terracotta of the vase.

This suggests a fun and lively palette, perhaps for a kitchen, living room, or an informal dining area.

Color Ideas from the World of Art 3

THE PAPER CUTTER

This hand-colored, period engraving presents a fine palette of adjacent colors—golden mustards, rich browns, and deep, tawny reds.

This could be an ideal scheme for a living room, den, office, or hallway.

GIRL WITH ORANGE

This finely done illustration suggests an elegant neutral palette, with the main wall color coming from the soft grays of the little girl's dress, paired with the darker grays of the shadows. The color of the orange, the little girl is holding creates a warm, vibrant accent—enlivening the palette.

This charming scheme would be lovely for a bedroom, living room, or entryway

AUTUMN BUGGY RIDE

Here's an idea for a comforting color scheme based on an autumnal theme. The wall colors could be picked up from the warm beige of the woman's jacket, or from the lighter putty colors of her dress, with a refreshing accent coming from the complementary mid-green of the hedge.

This palette would be the perfect choice for a bedroom, living room, dining room, or family room.

Ralph Lauren Home

I was taking a look at the 3 new Ralph Lauren Home collections from over the weekend - has anyone else seen them? Usually I'm so excited by all the images that they put togehter! They have such a creative team - many of whom go on to become respected interior designers in their own right. But this season was a bit of a disappointment. All of these collections look like they're a pastiche of recycled looks - particularly "St Germain". Perhaps I'm being too critical, I'm sure it would not be an easy task to create 3 new collections per season (? or biannually - not sure), but this collection looks so re-hashed . Apart from the name, there is nothing that stands out as being french about this look either. It looks tired too.

Small Spaces

I found these images of Roger Lussier's Boston apartment in the House Beautiful book "Decorating for Small Spaces", from the library of afriend. Interiors from this book have been blogged about a few times, including interiors by Greg Jordan and Miles Redd (both by Peak of Chic), but not this one (to my knowledge). I love the simplicity of the colour palette, and how he has displayed his art collection without worrying about lack of wall space. Very chic indeed!
